3756Thermal discomfort caused by personal protective equipment in healthcare workers during the delta COVID-19 pandemic in Guangzhou, China: A case study

Background In contrast to the previous COVID-19 pandemic, most frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) worked on residents’ nucleic acid tests in outdoor environments, instead of taking care of COVID-19 patients in hospitals during the hot summer of 2021. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of thermal discomfort caused by personal protective equipment (PPE). Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted online at hospitals from 11 administrative regions of Guangzhou for the assessment of thermal discomfort among HCWs from June 12–16, 2021. Univariate and logistic regression analyses were used to explore the risk factors associated with thermal discomfort. Results A total of 3658 valid responses were collected. The thermal discomfort and humid discomfort levels increased from 2.91 ± 1.19 to 3.61 ± 0.72 and from 0.98 ± 1.36 to 3.06 ± 1.1 after wearing PPE, respectively (p < 0.01). Feelings of being “very hot” and “uncomfortably humid” were the most influenced by wearing PPE, increasing from 31% to 69.1% and from 9.1% to 45.7%, respectively. There were significant increases in the thermal discomfort level (3.75 ± 0.57 vs. 3.33 ± 0.89, p < 0.01) and the humid discomfort level (3.33 ± 0.95 vs. 2.54 ± 1.19, p < 0.01) between the comfortable group and uncomfortable group, accompanied by similar patterns in the feelings of being “very hot” and “uncomfortably humid.” For general thermal-related symptoms, the most common new-onset symptom was profuse sweating (80%) followed by labored breathing (55.2%) and excessive dehydration (46.8%), while facial swelling (74%) was associated with local thermal-related symptoms, followed by hand maceration erosion (56.7%) and visual impairment (49.3%). In the multivariate analysis, the apparent temperature of the environment (≥35 °C), working in negative-pressure ambulances and outdoors, continuing to wear PPE for 1–3 days during this period, being aged >40 years, and previous experiences fighting the pandemic were independently associated with thermal discomfort (p < 0.01). Immediately after PPE removal, 32.3% of respondents considered drinking ice water/another drink, followed by 25% shortening the duration of wearing PPE and 19.1% going to the toilet. A large proportion of the participants looked forward to modifications to the material of the suit (72.9%) and mask (53.4%) for heat dissipation and dehumidification, as well as anti-fogging goggles (60.2%), adding hydration equipment to PPE (53.4%), and using soft materials to reduce pressure (40%). Conclusions Thermal discomfort is common and degrades health physiology related to PPE in summer environments. This suggests that modifications to the current working practices are urgently required to improve the resilience of HCWs and enhance their services during pandemics.

3758Premorbid echocardiography and risk of hospitalization in COVID-19

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has caused a global pandemic unprecedented in a century. Though primarily a respiratory illness, cardiovascular risk factors predict adverse outcomes. We aimed to investigate the role of baseline echocardiographic abnormalities in further refining risk in addition to clinical risk factors. METHODS: Adults with COVID-19 positive RT-PCR test across St Luke’s University Health Network between March 1st 2020-October 31st 2020 were identified. Those with trans-thoracic echocardiography (TTE) within 15–180 days preceding COVID-19 positivity were selected, excluding severe valvular disease, acute cardiac event between TTE and COVID-19, or asymptomatic patients positive on screening. Demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic variables were manually extracted from patients’ EHR and compared between groups stratified by disease severity. Logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of hospitalization. RESULTS: 192 patients met inclusion criteria. 87 (45.3%) required hospitalization, 34 (17.7%) suffered severe disease (need for ICU care/mechanical ventilation/in-hospital death). Age, co-morbidities, and several echocardiographic abnormalities were more prevalent in those with moderate-severe disease than in mild disease, with notable exceptions of systolic/diastolic dysfunction. On multivariate analysis, age (OR 1.039, 95% CI 1.011–1.067), coronary artery disease (OR 4.184, 95% CI 1.451–12.063), COPD (OR 6.886, 95% CI 1.396–33.959) and left atrial diameter ≥ 4.0 cm (OR 2.379, 95% CI 1.031–5.493) predicted need for hospitalization. Model showed excellent discrimination (ROC AUC 0.809, 95% CI 0.746–0.873). CONCLUSIONS: Baseline left atrial enlargement is an independent risk factor for risk of hospitalization among patients with COVID-19. When available, baseline LA enlargement may identify patients for (1) closer outpatient follow up, and (2) counseling vaccine-hesitancy. 3759CADA: a teacher-facing learning analytics dashboard to foster teachers' awareness of students' participation and discourse patterns in online discussions

Despite the potential of learning analytics (LA) to support teachers’ everyday practice, its adoption has not been fully embraced due to the limited involvement of teachers as co-designers of LA systems and interventions. This is the focus of the study described in this paper. Following a design-based research (DBR) approach and guided by concepts from the socio-cultural perspective and human-computer interaction (HCI), we design, test, and evaluate a teacher-facing LA dashboard, the Canvas Discussion Analytics Dashboard (CADA), in real educational settings. The goal of this dashboard is to support teachers’ roles in online environments through insights into students’ participation and discourse patterns. We evaluate CADA through 10 in-depth interviews with university teachers to examine their experiences using CADA in seven blended undergraduate and graduate courses over a one-year period. The findings suggest that engaging teachers throughout the analytics tool design process and giving them control/agency over LA tools can favour their adoption in practice. Additionally, the alignment of dashboard metrics with relevant theoretical constructs allows teachers to monitor the learning designs and make course design changes on the fly. The teachers in this study emphasise the need for LA dashboards to provide actionable insights by moving beyond what things are towards how things should be. This study has several contributions. First, we make an artefact contribution (e.g. CADA), an LA dashboard to support teachers with insights into students’ online discussions. Second, by leveraging theory, and working with the teachers to develop and implement a dashboard in authentic teaching environments, we make an empirical, theoretical and methodological contribution to the field of learning analytics and technology enhanced learning. We synthesise these through practical design and implementation considerations for researchers, dashboard developers, and higher education institutions.

3760Transition from Traditional to Online Learning in Hong Kong Tertiary Educational Institutions During COVID-19 Pandemic

The adoption of online learning approach in education is becoming more popular around the world to overcome the time and spatial barriers of traditional face-to-face learning. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the normality of learning and avoiding face-to-face activities is one tactic to minimise the spread of COVID-19. This study investigated the perception of online learning from students’ and teachers’ perspectives compared to traditional face-to-face learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ten focus group interviews were conducted, nine of which involved fifty-five students, while the remaining one involved eight full-time teachers. All informants were recruited from two Hong Kong tertiary educational institutions: the Hong Kong Community College, and the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The Community of Inquiry model and Pedagogy-driven, Learner-Centred, Objective-Oriented and Technology-Enable model were adopted as a framework to analyse students’ and teachers’ perceptions of social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence. Qualitative content analysis indicated that teacher-student and student–student interactions were the biggest challenge in online learning, and this affected the acquisition and application of knowledge in terms of cognitive presence. Other factors such as personality, learning environment, and technical skills affected the perception of both online and face-to-face learning.

3761MaSter-Bio-Messinstrument für das akademische Selbstkonzept zum technologiebezogenen Professionswissen von angehenden Biologielehrpersonen

Digital technologies can—if meaningfully integrated into the lessons—promote learning. However, whether the potentials of digital technologies are actually used in the regular classroom depends to a relevant degree on the teacher and his or her willingness to do so. One important factor for this willingness is the teachers’ academic self-concept related to technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). In order to understand the construct in its depth and to be able to assess the success of interventions in teacher education, the valid and reliable measurement of the academic self-concept related to technological pedagogical content knowledge is important. In this article, the MaSter-Bio is presented as a measurement instrument for the academic self-concept related to technological pedagogical content knowledge of prospective biology teachers. In its development, the current research on academic self-concept and technological pedagogical content knowledge, the usability in German-speaking countries, and a specific refinement for biology teaching were taken into account. Reliability and validity were tested on a sample of 403 prospective biology teachers. The instrument reliably measures the seven hypothesized subscales of the construct and provides sufficient evidence for discriminant and convergent validity.

3762Local-currency debt and currency internationalization dynamics: A nonlinear framework

The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between the exposition of emerging countries to original sin and the internationalization process of their currency in a nonlinear framework. For that purpose, we use a panel dataset of 12 emerging countries from 2005Q4 to 2018Q3, and we implement two complementary methodologies: a multiplicative interaction model and a dynamic panel threshold model. We investigate the impact of the measures of the currency internationalization process on the ability of emerging countries to issue debt in local currency. We show that the Economic size and the institutional quality of emerging countries, as well as the FX turnover of their currency, interact when explaining the share of local-currency external debt. Moreover, our results reveal the existence of thresholds beyond which there is a change in the evolution of original sin, notably for the economic size and the governance index of emerging countries.

3763The Public Health Implications for the Refugee Population, Particularly in Poland, Due to the War in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation initiated a military invasion of Ukraine, resulting in a significant armed conflict in Europe. Large numbers of refugees and asylum-seekers have left Ukraine. As of March 29, more than 4 million refugees, including over 1.5 million children, have left Ukraine, while about 7 million individuals have become displaced within Ukraine. Most refugees have gone to bordering countries, with 60% coming to Poland. This large number of refugees in such a short time requires urgent public health measures to ensure their health and safety. Refugees to Poland must receive access to healthcare, social care, and education. Those who have chronic disease and malignancy must continue to receive treatment. Medical students’ continued education and training in their host countries should be prioritized to provide needed healthcare resources. Epidemiological disease surveillance and disease prevention are required at this time. The continuation of the current conflict in Ukraine also poses a potentially severe risk to the global environment and long-term food security. This editorial aims to highlight the public health implications for the refugee population, particularly in Poland, due to the current war in Ukraine.

3764Facile and template-free synthesis of nano-macroporous LaCoO3 perovskite oxide for efficient diesel soot oxidation

The basic LaCoO(3) perovskite oxides were prepared by the series of methods (reverse co-precipitation, citric acid aided sol–gel, glycine assisted solution combustion), underwent physicochemical characterization (XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS and SEM), followed by their soot oxidation activity tests in both “loose” and “tight” conditions of soot-catalyst contact. The activity tests revealed that the LaCoO(3) catalyst formed using glycine assisted combustion synthesis gives the best performance with the T(10), T(50), and T(90) at 361 °C, 404 °C and 445 °C, respectively, in loose contact conditions and T(10), T(50), and T(90) at 306 °C, 330 °C and 355 °C, respectively, in tight contact conditions. Its outstanding performance can be attributed to its unique morphology consisting of scaffolds having an extensively interconnected macroporous network with macropores having nanoporous struts as walls as evidenced by SEM results. Such morphology makes the active sites of inner pores accessible to the gaseous (air) as well solid reactant (soot particles), thereby benefitting soot oxidation reaction. 3768COVID-19 und die Onkologie: agiles Patientenmanagement: Reorganisation der radioonkologischen Versorgung am Universitätsklinikum Köln

At the Radiation Oncology Department at the University Hospital of Cologne workflows and key procedures were remodelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The treatment facility is closely located to the first German hotspot region Heinsberg. During the 2021 German flood disaster the hospital engaged in building treatment synergies to continue cancer care that was initiated in destroyed regional facilities. Test and quarantine methods were implemented early to safely, successfully and effectively continue primary oncology care throughout the SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks at a maximum care provider. By actively managing patient appointments and therapy processes in multiprofessional teams, initiation and continuation of indicated radiation diagnostics and treatments were preferred over cancelling or deferring essential care. We here report on our active strategies to optimize the infrastructure utilization, increase treatment quality and avoid financial imbalance in times of reduced medical infrastructure capacities and ressources due to a global socio-economic health crisis.

3769"It's all in the moment": a mixed-methods study of elementary science teacher adaptiveness following professional development on knowledge generation approaches

This special edition is based on the revelation that “the lessons learned and unlearned during COVID-19 grant us an unparalleled opportunity to reflect.” Here, we reflect on lessons learned related to teacher adaptiveness. We examined how the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the adaptiveness necessary for teachers to knowledge generation approaches aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. First, we outline a three-year professional development program focused on knowledge generation approaches. We present findings from teachers’ experiences teaching science from 2019 to 2021, collected through consecutive form explanatory mixed-methods analysis involving written responses to vignettes (n = 474) and classroom observations (n = 58). Then, using an individual teacher case study, we explore how the shift to virtual teaching was supported by adaptiveness. Results suggest a significant relationship between teacher adaptiveness and the use of knowledge generation approaches. We conclude with implications for elementary science teacher professional development and present questions for further research on adaptiveness. 3770Understanding the Terminal Area Traffic Flow Characteristics Using Flight Record Data

Terminal area (TMA) is a significant component of the air transportation and air traffic management system. TMA consists of the airport and the transitional airspace between airports and air traffic control sectors and plays a non-trivial role in determining throughput and operational efficiency. Flights in TMA fly through defined courses, distances, and altitudes between specified navigation aids, expressed as standard terminal arrival routes and standard instrument departures. TMA operations are intrinsically complex, and a deeper understanding of TMA operational behaviour and performance is essential to provide timely solutions for schedule and slot allocations, flow, and congestion management. This paper proposes a flight record driven descriptive framework for simplified analysis and characterization of air traffic flows in TMA. This framework aims to perform a cross-sectional descriptive analysis of four key flow performance metrics and proposes a three-step methodology to extract these parameters from flight records. The framework is easy to comprehend, and results can contribute to developing new strategies and decision support tools for TMA traffic management.

3777Contemporary Mobility Decisions of International and Danish Students in Denmark Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

The study investigates the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mobility decisions of international and domestic (Danish) students in Denmark employing a phenomonology research design. The study revealed that some of the study participants’ mobility decisions and future employment prospects were largely impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even those who had their internships abroad confirmed, uncertainties abound whether it will be done remotely or physically. Also, the switching from physical to online classes makes students-students and students-lectures interaction and relationship very challenging resulting in some cases, poor academic performance, loneliness, depression, and mental health problems. Besides, we discovered some positive endorsements towards the Danish government’s handling of the pandemic. Finally, the study proposed for a complete opening of the higher educational institutions and libraries in Denmark for physical teaching and learning to occur, with adherence to the safety protocols.

3778Cross-time-frequency analysis of volatility linkages in global currency markets: an extended framework

This research aims to detect cross-border volatility linkages among various currencies within the foreign exchange market with respect to different sampling frequencies. Eleven currency pairs are included in the sample, which covers a period from 2009 to 2020. Volatility linkages among these selected exchange rates were tested by utilizing a multivariate VAR-BEKK-GARCH model. Results indicate that volatility linkages among currencies sampled are far stronger in higher frequency terms. Strikingly, the results denote that the major currencies do not play a strong leading role in volatility transmission. This finding is more apparent when daily and intraday results are compared.

3780Learned lesson from COVID-19: can routine immunizations be the first line of defense against the next pandemic?

BACKGROUND: Single-cell sequencing studies on the lung microenvironment have revealed that the outcome of COVID-19 depends largely on the immune system response rather than the viral load. A robust innate immune response and a regulated adaptive immunity can prevent the worst outcomes such as hospitalization and the need for mechanical ventilation. MAIN BODY: Intriguingly, several vaccines pertaining to the routine vaccination schedule, not only BCG, can skew the immune response towards the aforementioned beneficial effects. SHORT CONCLUSION: This means that routine immunization not only can help in the current pandemic but can also offer a rapid rescue in the subsequent epidemics or pandemics until a vaccine is developed.

3782Blood purification in sepsis and COVID-19: what´s new in cytokine and endotoxin hemoadsorption

Sepsis and COVID-19 are two clinical conditions that can lead to a dysregulated inflammatory state causing multiorgan dysfunction, hypercytokinemia, and a high risk of death. Specific subgroups of critically ill patients with particular characteristics could benefit from rescue treatment with hemoadsorption. There is a lack of adequately designed randomized controlled trials evaluating the potential benefits of cytokine or endotoxin hemoadsorption. Critically ill COVID-19 patients with severe acute respiratory failure poorly responsive to conventional treatment could be candidates to receive cytokine hemoadsorption in the presence of high levels of interleukin 6. This treatment can also be suitable for patients with refractory septic shock and hypercytokinemia. In the context of high endotoxin activity, hemoadsorption with polymyxin B could improve clinical parameters and the prognosis of patients with refractory septic shock. Predictive enrichment, using biomarkers or other individual features, identifies potential responders to cytokine, endotoxin, or sequential hemoadsorption. Besides, recognizing the particular subsets of patients likely to respond to one or both types of hemoadsorption will aid the design of future studies that accurately validate the effectiveness of these therapies.

3784Student interest, concerns and information-seeking behaviors related to COVID-19

COVID-19 creates an opportunity for science classrooms to relate content about viruses to students’ personal experiences with the pandemic. Previous researchers have shown that students are interested in crisis situations like disease outbreaks; however, they primarily acquire information about these events through internet sources which are often biased. We argue that it is important to understand student interest, concerns, and information-seeking behaviors related to COVID-19 to support science classroom learning and engagement about the virus and other potential outbreaks. We surveyed 224 high school students and analyzed their responses to six open-ended questions. We found that students expressed the most interest in topics related to the origin of COVID-19 and vaccines. Their greatest concerns included contracting the virus or someone they know contracting the virus and vaccine distribution. Of our sample, only 6.7% reported using their teachers as their source of COVID-19 information. Science classrooms have the potential to pique students’ situational interest by discussing COVID-19 topics that are important to students, which can increase their academic performance, content knowledge, attention, and engagement in learning about viruses. Moreover, classroom instruction about COVID-19 by teachers has shown to alleviate students’ stress and anxiety. We provide key areas of student interest about COVID-19 to help educators address students’ questions and improve curricular resources on viral pandemics.

3786Impact of working from home on European office rents and vacancy rates

The massive shift to working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic triggered discussions about its potential impact on the future demand for office space and the risk it poses to the performance of office markets. Against this background, the goal of this paper is to investigate the link between working from home and the evolution of key indicators of office occupier markets across Europe over the past three decades. Based on the data from Eurostat and CBRE, the paper uses panel regression to investigate the temporal as well as cross-sectional relationships between the share of the workforce working from home and office rents and vacancy rates in major cities. The results are interesting in several ways. Firstly, changes in the share of employees working from home did not appear to have any significant impact on the evolution of rents or vacancy rates over time. However, occasional homeworking was significant in explaining cross-sectional differences in office market indicators. Moreover, contrary to the initial expectations, higher share of employees occasionally working from home appeared to be associated with stronger performance of the respective office market. As explanation, the paper proposes a hypothesis that this was due to working from home being only one aspect of broader changes in the office work environment and related socio-economic trends that had a net beneficial effect on office occupier markets. Although the results refer to historical developments and may not be fully applicable to the current context of the pandemic, they highlight the need to consider working from home in a broader perspective of office occupier trends and ways of working.

3788Effective Learning During COVID-19: Multilevel Covariates Matching and Propensity Score Matching

In large-scale observational data with a hierarchical structure, both clusters and interventions often have more than two levels. Popular methods in the binary treatment literature do not naturally extend to the hierarchical multilevel treatment case. For example, most K-12 and universities have moved to an unprecedented hybrid learning module during the COVID-19 pandemic where learning modes include hybrid and fully remote learning, while students were clustered within a class and school region. It is challenging to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning outcomes of the multilevel treatments in a hierarchically data structured. In this paper, we study a covariates matching method and develop a generalized propensity score matching method to reduce the bias of estimation in the intervention effect. We also propose simple algorithms to assess the covariates balance for each approach. We examine the finite sample performance of the methods via simulation studies and apply the proposed methods to analyze the effectiveness of learning modes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

3800Arthroscopic debridement for acute hemorrhagic subacromial bursitis following COVID-19 vaccine administration: A case report

The rapid rollout of vaccinations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to their widespread distribution and administration throughout the world. The benefit of these vaccinations in preventing the spread of the disease and diminishing symptoms in patients who contract COVID-19 has been fervently studied and reported. While vaccinations remain an effective and generally safe method of limiting disease transmission and virus-related mortality, vaccine administration is not completely without risk. Shoulder injuries related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) have been described with previously available vaccines but have yet to be widely reported in the COVID-19 vaccination population. We present a case report of a young, high-functioning patient who presented with acute subacromial bursitis after COVID-19 vaccine administration due to improper vaccination technique.
